Compendium of Single Use Plastics Alternatives

The Pacific Ocean Litter Program (POLP) is committed to reducing single-use plastic marine litter in the coastal environments of Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Developed in recognition of the significant threat that marine litter poses to the environment, public health, and economic development of the Pacific region, POLP is committed to finding solutions.

There is an urgent need to explore alternative solutions to single-use plastic products. As part of this effort, WREN has compiled a region-wide compendium of alternative products currently used in the Pacific region and globally to replace single-use plastics targeted by the POLP.

This activity will lay the foundation for progress toward the following intermediate outcomes:

  • Pacific Islander-owned businesses and community-based enterprises producing alternative sustainable products locally.
  • Dissemination of SPREP information and tools to enable governments, industries, and businesses to select viable alternative sustainable products, whether imported or locally produced.

The alternative products identified in the compendium will be considered for adoption through pilot activities in one or more PICs. To support POLP outcomes, the compendium and assessment will identify recommended suppliers of alternative products and potential opportunities to produce alternative products within PICs.
