Transforming Sargassum and Organic Waste into Biofertiliser in Belize

WREN has been awarded a project to lead the Circularity in Action project under IDB Lab’s Sargassum Innovation Quest in Belize. The project addresses Belize’s growing sargassum and organic waste management challenges through a circular economy approach that turns environmental burdens into valuable resources. Drawing on the success of similar work in Samoa, the initiative would introduce composting and hydrolysate production systems capable of converting sargassum, compostable diapers, food waste, and other organic materials into high-quality compost and bio-stimulant products. Full-scale composting sites would be established in two Belizean communities, one tourism-focused and one fishing-based, to demonstrate practical, scalable waste-to-resource models that strengthen coastal resilience, improve soil quality, and reduce marine pollution. The project places community and stakeholder collaboration at its core, with women’s groups central to implementation, and would generate economic feasibility assessments, replicability toolkits, and policy recommendations to support long-term sustainability.
