Considering GEDSI Elements for Waste Management Sustainable Financing

Countries in the Pacific are increasingly viewing sustainable financing schemes as a solution for waste recovery and recycling. These schemes work by calculating the “true cost” of collecting, processing, and exporting recyclable items, and applying this fee upfront upon the importation or manufacture of the item. An additional deposit is added to the sale of the product, which is returned to the consumer when the product is returned for recycling, incentivising recycling behaviour.

The guide for considering Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) factors was designed to assist decision makers in the Pacific during the design, consultation, implementation, and monitoring of a waste management sustainable financing scheme to ensure potential GEDSI implications are identified and appropriately addressed.
