Expanding Community-Centered Composting in Samoa

WREN is working with Recycle Organics to establish and expand community composting solutions in selected villages across Samoa. The project is currently running in Tanoalei’a and Magafiafia community in Apia. The project addresses the high volume of organic waste in the Apia waste stream by implementing low-cost, scalable composting systems using the SPICE method developed by WREN’s Organics Management Expert, Gerry Gillespie. Building on successful pilots in Poutasi and Moata’a, WREN works closely with local stakeholders, particularly women, to manage household organic waste and compostable materials using Maye Bruce boxes constructed from recycled pallets. The project strengthens community capacity and promotes circular economy practices, offering a replicable model for other coastal communities across the Pacific.
