Port Waste Facility Audits for Sea-Based Marine Litter

Using the IMO-specified methodology for port waste reception facility audits, combined with data on waste generated at sea by vessels operating within each country’s EEZ, Dr. Amardeep Wander led teams in conducting audits across four countries. The resulting reports estimated waste generation and potential leakage from maritime activities, and outlined practical recommendations to improve waste reception facilities at ports while supporting compliance with international, national, and local obligations. The data and insights generated directly informed subsequent initiatives in Belize, including the National Marine Litter Action Plan, the Ports Upgrade Feasibility Study, and the National Maritime Transport Policy. Amardeep led this work as director of APWC.
